tennis blogging, Rome edition, day 3
10:45 am: The crowd for Berdych-Wawrinka sure got their money's worth - a three-hour duel with the most evenly matched pair I've watched in a while (stats bear out how tight the match was, although Stan raised his level a notch during the final game and the TB). Both of them have some mad skills (Stan's backhand, Tomas's forehand) but are also maddeningly inconsistent, which translates into both gorgeously angled winners and groundies boinging into the net. And Berdych needs a serve doctor, because that thing is about as reliable as my seizure-prone netbook.
On the other hand, he's way easier on the eyes than Stan, and he ripped some beauties today, as well as winning a 7-deuce game on Stan's serve and saving two match points. On the back left paw, I predicted Stan would win this.
At the moment, I'm 722/15029 in the ATP draw challenge, which is hilarious considering how trashed my bracket already is. For a while, Sauce looked like he was about to wreck my entire lower half (I have him in a final vs. Rafa. Yes, his serve is even less reliable than Tomas's, but no guts, no glory...)
Nice sportsmanship by Fer - signalling to umpire that a Bolelli ball landed on the line rather than out.
MoLay chair umpire for Tsonga-Troicki. So tempting to stay on the couch, but it's time for lunch and chores. Allez JW!
12:38 pm: Per Ricky Dimon: "Both players finished the marathon with four aces and three double-faults. Of the 203 points contested, Berdych won 102 and Wawrinka won 101. Wawrinka, though, won the last two that mattered."
Of my live picks today, the only one who didn't win was Almagro. That's another case where I actually liked his opponent better (Ljubicic), but went with the "safer" option of betting on a Spaniard on clay. However, not being Rafa or Juanqui, Nico's middle name is "headcase," and my favorite tweet of the day comes from Italian fan Angelica Fratini: "Someone should tell to Almagro that on court 6 should play tennis and not argue with spectators.even if watching it was fun :-D."
(A. is on a roll today. Her other observations have included a summary of Federer playing dubs ("It's not a tennis match it's rock concert") and MoLay's popularity: "After federer, nadal and djokovic the autograph more request is to the umpire lahyani." *glee*)
D'accord - time to order coffee and crunch down some words and numbahs.
