A/N: x-posted to [insanejournal.com profile] lupin_snape as well. I was originally intending this to be a companion piece to Continuing -- but the image/PWP I still have in mind for that will have to be written some other time.

The weather is dreary enough that it doesn’t feel like spring, but to Lupin, the air is resplendent and wild with the scent of awakening trees. He finds himself as restless as the students he’s tutoring, and when Seraphina Weasley begs off a session in order to visit with her Uncle Charlie’s dragons, Lupin cheerfully reassures her mother that a day off will hardly harm her standing as the smartest student witch at Hogwarts since—well, Hermione herself.

As soon as the Floo-call is over, he Summons his cloak and Apparates to one of the smaller Orkney islands. This far north, the winds are even more chilly and savage than the ones scouring mainland Scotland, and Lupin finds them intoxicating as they whip at his clothes and ruffle his hair and drench his senses with the tang of newly-broken earth and the burgeoning sweetness of running sap.

He has been walking about for an hour when Snape finally joins him: Lupin can visit the island whenever he wants, but he is not to interrupt Snape’s research or experiments. It has been crucial that it remain Snape’s choice to seek him out.

Snape always has.

They know that Snape always will.
