DRABBLE: Developing

Title: Developing
Fandom: FAKE
Characters: Ryo thinking about his Aunt Elena
Rating: G
Word count: 100 words
Notes: Takes place after the series. Direct references to the Ryo "side story" published a couple years ago as extra chapters in the Japanese reissues (scanlations here - listed as "FAKE extra ch 4" and "ch 5"). Written for halfamoon 2009, day 11.

Ryo and his Aunt Elena seldom talk about the summer he was eighteen, nor do they ever revisit the book of photographs she published as a result of their stay at the lake, in spite of its popular reception. But as an adult, Ryo now truly realizes how lonely she must have been in that isolated vale, her love of her work notwithstanding -- and how worried she must have been for him, especially after Charlotte Owen disappeared.

As Dee and Bikky scurry to do her bidding, Ryo smiles: Aunt Elena is living proof that not everyone he loves is doomed.

Just finished reading the scanalations. That was a really sad story (in the manga), and it's nice to see Ryo losing his gloom and feeling happy.

Extraneous comment about the manga: the art in the second series looks totally different to me, almost like it was drawn by a different artist. I don't know if it had anything to do with Matoh-sensei's health problems, but it was a little weird. It was nice to read to read more FAKE, though.

Thanks for reading! ... and yeah, the change in the artwork is disconcerting; I don't like it myself, because I like the men looking like men, and they look much younger and softer in Matoh's new style. (For that matter, I prefer how Ryo looks in the earlier volumes than the later ones -- he gets shaggier and less crisp, which I suppose could reflect Dee's influence, but I dunno - I miss his beautiful jawline! [/rambles]) I read somewhere that Matoh may simply be going along with popular illustration trends, but I'm not well-versed enough in manga to gauge that for myself. :-/
