As always, this is lovely.

In some ways, how you talk about UU here reminds me a bit of what we Episcopalians go through. We have our "three-legged stool" of scripture/tradition/reason, so we are working from a common scripture and say a common Creed. But the "striv(ing) to remember the diversity of needs among the whole" is a critical part of a healthy Episcopalian congregation, and one of the reasons I landed there rather than remaining in my former religious tradition. (There, saying "diversity of needs" was akin to saying "let's go embrace evil! Maybe kill some kittens while we're at it! Whoo!" I am perhaps being slightly overdramatic, but not terribly so. {g} )

The recognition, embracing, and integration of differences and different backgrounds within a group only makes it stronger, I think. UUs definitely have a much wider range of differences to work with than most other traditions, and I admire the way you make learning about and working with these differences an important part of your involvement in the church.
