From The New York Times:

Powerball lottery officials suspected fraud: how could 110 players in the March 30 drawing get five of the six numbers right? That made them all second-prize winners, and considering the number of tickets sold in the 29 states where the game is played, there should have been only four or five.

But from state after state they kept coming in, the one-in-three-million combination of 22, 28, 32, 33, 39.

It took some time before they had their answer: the players got their numbers inside fortune cookies, and all the cookies came from the same factory in Long Island City, Queens.

Christopher Rowe knows what I look like on a good day, and also has a magazine you oughter order. Really. There's a nifty poem on page 21. . .

[livejournal.com profile] qe2 couldn't make it, alas (hope you feel much better soon, sweetie!), but Daisy and I nonetheless had a fine time splitting a bottle of Solaz over a leisurely dinner. For appetizers, I'd prepared guacamole and dressed a couple of tomatoes with balsamic vinegar, fennel pollen, and parmesan cheese; I left the crisps I'd intended to serve for dessert in the oven too long (so we made do with just the strawberries and chocolate) but the shiitake-cabbage wontons were fine and the rice okay (admittedly more than a little soggy, but that will sometime happens since I seldom measure in casual cooking). The Abbygator got plenty of scritching, so she was happy as well. A good night off.
