eBay quote of the day
13/5/05 18:39From a UK listing for a pedometer: "Used once by uninspirable husband."
I'm finally on the verge of purchasing a pedometer, partly to keep myself honest about how much (or not) distance I'm actually covering when I go trotting around the 'hood, and mostly because I'm a deadline-motivated nutter and I need a concrete, programmable goal (i.e., logging in x miles per week to improve my odds of walking 26.2 miles in under seven hours a year from now) to haul myself up and off the living room couch on a consistent basis.
Part of me is wishing that the marvelous-sounding Fit Bug Pro was available in the US, even though that's utterly illogical since the probable cost would be three or four times more what I'm currently willing to splurge on anything workout-related (other than shoes, entry fees and maybe bras). Then again, my ideal pedometer would be wearable on the wrist or shoe and mechanical, which would require defying the laws of physics (unless I glued my wrist to my hip, which would in turn be poor form), and while some of those speed-distance monitors look wicked cool, I don't need anything that sophisticated, since I won't be gunning for time when I start "racing" again: the only reasons I'll need to check pace every once in a while will be in order to pick my proper spot within the starting-line melee, to confirm whether I can walk fast enough to finish the course within the time limit (7 hours averages out to 16 minutes per mile) and to guesstimate when I'll get home for dinner when planning longer walks.
In short, a basic mile-counter and my wristwatch will more than suffice.
(If you're gobsmacked at how much energy I'm capable of expending on exceedingly simple decisions, you're not alone. If you were to hold a density-off between me and a tin of fruitcake right this minute, the fruitcake wouldn't stand a chance.)

14/5/05 14:16 (UTC)Post what you end up deciding. That way I can be lazy and just go with your recommendation instead of doing the research myself. I'd like to get a pedometer, but more out of curiosity than any particular goal.
