No time to explain/explore these in great detail (i.e., comments welcome, but I'll likely be slow to reply), but I want to dump these out of my head so they stop distracting me (at least for the moment):
(1) The fic for the
lupin_snape Special Project. (
_lore, it looks like it's heading over 10K, and I can't not finish it now. *glares at eggplant-chomping bunny and
busaikko*)
(2) "Just Like Strangers Here" - this is the one WiP I remain determined to finish before Deathly Hallows. The others I can envision wrapping up even after their universes get jossed, but the characters in "Strangers" exist and (fail to) connect in a very specific emotional space I don't think I'll be able to revisit after DH. (Plus there's the embarrassing fact that Part 1 will be over a year old by the time I post part 2.)
(3) I just now realized what I'm really afraid of, with Book 7: That JKR will ultimately cast Lupin as a traitor, betrayed by his desire to believe the best of the people willing to be his friends and allies. I can picture canon!Lupin being manipulated into costly assumptions and fatal errors by someone who knows how to play him; it would be heartbreaking but believable.
(4) There's also the possibility that JKR might cast Lupin as a deliberate traitor. He's demonstrated in earlier books that he's ready to lie or kill when the need/opportunity presents itself, and some of the descriptions in HBP could be read as hints that Lupin is close to being pushed past his limits. This would also be heartbreaking, but I've had longer to ponder this idea (several fic writers having already played with this scenario), so it stirs up nowhere near as much dread in me as the one above. Also, given that I strongly prefer badass!Lupin to weak!Lupin (the occasional present notwithstanding), #4 fits my range far more comfortably than #3.
(5) I honestly have no idea how I'm going to feel about Snape/Lupin after DH. On the one hand, I've never been this attracted/devoted to a fandom pairing before, and I'm exceedingly fond of making daft scenarios work, so there's a part of me that wants to go ahead and declare I'll still be a post-War Snupin writer even if she kills or marries either one of them off or consigns them to some other dire and dastardly fate. On the other hand, I'm not personally drawn to writing/reading "canon spackle" (
schemingreader's splendid term for missing scenes), so it's hard to see myself staying engaged if too many possibilities are closed off, or if the characterisations in DH end up making me cringe. *desperately and stubbornly hopes there's a more interesting explanation for HBP!Tonks on the horizon than grief, stress, and/or hormones*
But who knows? I'm still somewhat astonished that I even have an OTP, and I'm not ruling out taking up permanent residency in AUs after July 21. And it's also entirely possible that Lupin won't figure much in DH at all, which would be disappointing in some respects but liberating with regard to others. Hmmmmmm....
