catrinella's post and suite about grieving, and partly an extension of my own sporadic mourning and ongoing fretting over various loves and acquaintances who have not been doing so well. About which I do not care to elaborate upon here.
There's a sales tax referendum coming up in my county, and the pastors aren't happy. Ils ont raison. On the bright side, the Election Commission is in the best shape I've seen it since I started working as a poll official -- last week's training class was well-organized and worth the morning away from my own work.
In other good news, Saz and Erac were away from NOLA when Katrina smashed in, and another friend and his dogs were able to flee in time. I'm done with one rush job and making progress with another.qe2 and I had a fine time reconnecting Monday evening over cabbage-shiitake potstickers, stir-fried sugar snap peas, cucumber salad, and amaretto-laced mango chunks with vanilla ice cream and sugared wonton crisps.
I preached on Frederic G. Melcher Sunday morning (billing him as "the most influential Unitarian Universalist most UUs have never heard of") and had a delightful lunch afterwards with one of UUCC's founders and a couple from Chicago. There is something enormously rewarding about choosing the perfect benediction for a service: in this case, the morning's theme had centered on the search and distribution of knowledge, so when Wade read aloud John Brigham's words --
-- he was rewarded with a wave of appreciative laughter from the congregation. Amen and alleluia.
