Governor Phil Bredesen
Governor's Office
Tennessee State Capitol
Nashville, TN 37243-0001

Dear Governor Bredesen:

I was dismayed to read on several Tennessee-based weblogs about your support for Amendment 1. This effort to amend the state constitution is a serious mistake: it will unnecessarily discourage talented individuals (regardless of their sexual orientation) from viewing Tennessee as an attractive place to work and live. Given your strong support of efforts to promote business development in Tennessee, I feel confident that you do not wish to handicap our state in any way when it comes to welcoming smart, energetic, and experienced professionals; why, then, must you support legislation that basically informs one set of people that they are to be considered second-class citizens in our state, and reinforces among heterosexual liberals nationwide the all-too-common perception of the South as a hive of evangelical busybodies?

I am terribly disappointed in you -- so much that I will be giving additional thought to supporting other candidates. My vote was yours to lose, and I urge you to reconsider your support of this Amendment: there are fiscally sound reasons to oppose it even if one does not personally favor ratifying same-sex marriage as a legal institution, and I hope you will do what is best for our state by voting against Amendment 1.
