On the one hand, I just got back from dropping books off at the library. I keep asking the idiot in the mirror, "Haven't you learned anything over the past 15 years?" because this feeling like I'm reliving graduate school isn't healthy. There's a part of me that's well aware that I'm smarter and stronger than I ever was during my twenties, but I also keep having to fight off the feeling that I've barely made any progress at all.

On the other hand, there's a certain pleasure in observing who else happens to be out and about at 2 a.m.: aside from the usual jaywalkers and junkies, there were also a couple of youngsters dancing and snogging their way down Second Avenue.

Saw Vienna Teng in concert last week and met her afterwards. She's very pretty, very nice, and hella talented. At present, "Harbor" remains my favorite song of hers (downloadable from here), but "Shine" is what I've been replaying in the car and in my head the past couple of days:

shine with all the untold
hold the light given unto you
find the love to unfold
in this broken world we choose

Vienna Teng is awesome. IMO, a lot of piano-and-voice women sound like clones of one another, but she's found a way to come off unique. Where was she playing?

And why are you reliving grad school?

The show was at the Belcourt. The cellist and violinist with her also sang harmony on some of the songs, and did a little dance to "City Hall" at the end.

Too much caffeine and procrastination, too little sleep. A stupid way to live.

Do you like her new album? I can't seem to warm up to it. She's awesome, I've been to several concerts and followed her career closely, but I am so very fond of the first two albums that this third one isn't cutting it for me.

But it's Vienna, so I might eventually learn to love it.

I've only listened to it once so far. The first two songs are definitely catchy, and there's one midway through the album that has what I think of as a specifically Vienna keyboard riff -- but, honestly, I've been a bit too pell-mell over the past couple of weeks to truly absorb much of anything. :-/

I have fandom to thank for introducing me to her work -- I'd not heard of her until [livejournal.com profile] nsmom and [livejournal.com profile] gramarye1971 put "Eric's Song" on a mix last year. So it's all still pretty new to me.
