From Women's Wear Daily's feature on Lisa Cohen's bio of three 20th-century lives:

As Madge McHarg, an upper-middle-class girl in the Teens and early Twenties, [Madge Garland] was not expected to work. When she got a job at the company that published British Vogue, her father wrote to her boss, telling him that she was not of age and that he was perfectly capable of supporting her (she was almost 24 at the time), and asking that she be sent home. Fortunately, her employer declined to do so.

In happier news, I just heard about the totals for the chemo caps I helped sew last Thursday and Friday:

The final count was 88 over the two days! This is fabulous! More than 75 caps... will be given out directly to our patients [at VI Cancer Center]. If we had to purchase these, it would cost more than $2,200. [Some of the caps were donated to Gilda's Club.]

(As others of you know, my mother died of cancer four years ago. One of my nicer memories from that time is how thrilled she was when the American Cancer Society provided her with the perfect wig.)
