Part 8

For [insanejournal.com profile] xanthophyllippa. 2. An evening with Alan Rickman.

[Speaking of Alan Rickman, this exchange last night over at Untitled had me giggling.]

300 words, U, post-War. This one probably merits a warning for authorial self-indulgence. (Granted, they all do, but this one in particular.)

Snape frowned at the envelope on his plate. "Minerva, what is this?"

McGonagall smiled sweetly at him over the teapot. "You and Remus need a night away from the castle."

Snape poked at the envelope gingerly, suspicious. McGonagall snorted. "Oh, honestly, as if I'd serve you a Portkey with Remus across the table."

Snape's expression turned even more wary. "It's not my birthday or his, and our anniversary was two months ago. What's the occasion?"

"I am celebrating coming up with an elegant way to distract you two out of hexing the entire sixth-year class into oblivion. Don't think I haven't noticed how near you've been to using an Unforgivable on Bascombe."

"Minerva, I am always on the verge of using an Unforgivable on Bascombe."

"True, but when I see Remus considering it as well, it tells me you both need an evening off. At least amongst adults, you won't have detentions to supervise."

The production of Cyrano de Bergerac was stellar, with Alan Rickman playing the lead, Ralph Fiennes as De Guiche, Orlando Bloom as Christian, and Julie Delpy as Roxana. Lupin discreetly hexed the twenty-something twits behind them who complained about Rickman being too old for the part, and Snape handed Lupin his spare handkerchief when Roxana finally realized whose letter she'd worn close to her heart for fourteen years.

Afterwards, reluctant to return to the castle just yet, they went on a long walk. It was a chilly night, the wind stinging their faces and stealing away any words not spoken directly into the other person's ear. After several miles, they stepped into a late-night cafe and ordered wine.

Still slightly breathless, Lupin quietly observed, "That balcony scene would have been impossible in this weather."

Snape did not smile. "Words were never enough."

Understanding, Lupin kissed him.
