While hunting down a friend's address, I came across my program (a 3" x 4" metallic maroon booklet with gold embossing (the junior class colors)) from the 1983 Model High Junior-Senior Prom. The theme was "Expressions of the Orient" and I was a server. I suspect the program was a rush job, as I count at least three misspelled names in the lists of class officers and prom queen candidates, but what cracks me up is the menu:

The Samauri [sic]
(Chicken Breasts Supreme w/Mushroom Sauce)

Tea House Tempter
(Buttered Broccoli)

Mount Fuji's Peak
(Creamy Whipped Potatoes)

Cherry Blossom Special
(Fresh Fruit Cup w/ Green Ice)

Bonsai Garden Greens
(Tossed Salad & Tomato Wedge)

Sayonara
(Chess Pie)

Ah, but did you not know that Chess Pie is a time-honored Expression of the Orient? Snerk. Also, what the heck is green ice?

Beats me. The banquet was actually off-site at the Mule Barn, whereas all I had to do at my station in the gym was ladle out punch.

Wow. I don't remember any of that stuff, seeing as how I was angsty the whole night and eventually ditched my friends and went home and put on sweatpants. The teenage years; never again for all the tea the Orient can express.

My god, chess pie. I haven't had it in eight years since leaving Nashville. My arteries thank me.

That's priceless. Aside from the political incorrectness, broccoli as a tempter? Ahahaha!

Heh. I actually have a chess pie and a broccoli quiche cooling on top of my stove right now (the gentleman across the street passed away yesterday, so I'm taking them over to his family in a minute). Plus a second quiche and two chess tartlets (because I always end up with too much filling) and two pans of almond meringues (because when I don't use leftover egg whites right away I just end up forgetting they're in the freezer).

I was going to show my true Yank status by asking what Chess Pie was, but I am thinking better of the impulse :)

Recipes vary, but the basic concept includes five eggs, 1 1/3 cups of sugar, 1 cup of cream and six tablespoons of butter..
