Drat. Forgot all about NaDruWriNi until I saw [livejournal.com profile] jlundberg's posts just now. Alack. Too bloody sick...

(May not be coherent anyway, but the one glass of wine I had tonight wore off hours ago. Just whumped.)

You poker fiends that are reading? I invite -- nay, beg -- for your tips and recommendations: I'm playing in two games early next year. One Texas Hold'Em, the other dealer's choice stud/draw. (Also ended up with a fly-fishing lesson, a Chapman stick performance, a vocal master class, and a song to be named "Mechaieh." The annual church auction, it is dangerous...)

You might want to check out Wil Wheaton's blog-- he's big into poker, and I'm pretty sure he's recommended various resources/book.

I cannot recommend anything, as I am a danger to myself in card games. Apparently, I have the exact opposite of a poker face. :)

Hm. Wesley Crusher annoyed the hell out of me back when I watched the show, but I suppose it's past time for me to get over that... In any case, thanks for the suggestion!

I wasn't a fan of him on the show, much, but his blog is terrific (though not updated as regularly as it used to be). He talks about his writing, and auditioning, but I love it most when he talks about his stepsons and his relationship with them. He's turned into a great guy, it sounds like.

And there's poker info. :)

Hmmm. Texas Hold 'em is different than a normal stud/draw game because you have a community pot of cards--it is actually possible to tie in a Hold 'em game. That said, the best advice I can give you is never try to draw to an inside straight, you've got a better chance of making a flush in a draw game than a hold 'em game, and an ace in the hole with a bad kicker isn't always a good thing.

I know you're not a tv fiend, but Bravo televises Hold 'em poker--much of it's celebrity poker, but they have experts commenting on the games. You can learn a lot in an hour or so, and it's weirdly compelling to watch people play cards.

If we only lived in the same county, I'd be badgering you for practice sessions. ;-) As for the telly, we don't have cable, but I think I might've seen a couple installments of that show back in April, during a business trip. Should've taken notes, I guess...
