So that's what they're calling jill-of-all-trading these days: Penelope Trunk on 'portfolio careers' (Boston Globe).

The intersection of religion and critical thought: Amy Braverman, "Beyond Belief" (University of Chicago Magazine).

miPOradio's current podcast features an assortment of poems fromThe Bedside Guide To NoTell Motel, including mine (iTunes channel here). My track is about halfway through the show; it opens with Jill Essbaum's On Reading Poorly Transcribed Erotica, which is a hoot.

Do you like the new Dar album? I used to be a Real Big Fan, and then lost interest when she was really tetchy in a concert here about 5 years ago. And I thought "The Beauty of the Rain" had sold out towards more pop-oriented stuff, and not the long, acoustic, narrative songs I loved so much.

The only one that's grabbed me so far is "So Close to My Heart," which is essentially the same song as "If I Wrote You" (both music- and lyrics-wise). She's not a must-buy for me, but there's usually 2-4 songs on each album that end up in heavy rotation on my car stereo.

I'm enough into pop that it's hardly a deal-breaker for me (hell, I'll even cop to liking Celine Dion), but the only tune that stood out for me in Beauty was "I Saw A Bird Fly Away" (John Popper's high tenor vocals -- ). Green World, on the other hand, had 5 songs that hit me right, and my desert-island pick of the lot remains Mortal City ("As Cool As I Am" and "Iowa" in particular, and Pierce Pettis played "Family" for me at the first concert of his I attended).

I don't know that there's *anything* I like on Beauty. Green World has some stuff I like, though, because it brings back memories of having been in RI for the Newport Folk Festival right before the album came out, so she sang "What Do You Love More Than Love?" and "And A God Descended" and "I Had No Right" and I got up and danced and had a fabulous time in the New England summer sun even though I was all by myself.

I'm torn between Mortal City and End of the Summer as my desert-island pick. I agree with you on "As Cool As I Am" And "Iowa," but I also totally dig "Are You Out There?" (it's like my mind in a song!!) and "Party Generation."

(Pop = love. You should see my iTunes library.)

"What Do You Love More Than Love?" and "And A God Descended" and "I Had No Right"

Mm, those are on my list. Although the one I replay most often is "It Happens Every Day."

I got up and danced and had a fabulous time in the New England summer sun even though I was all by myself.

That sounds wonderful. I'm often more uninhibited by myself than when with others, as it happens, although I haven't danced outside in *ages* (not counting weddings and church parking-lot parties...). Must remedy that...
