It was common for those who had known Lily to compare her eyes to emeralds, but Remus privately associated her with diamonds, as did Severus. Although they never spoke of her to each other, neither man would ever forget the mission where she had helped them secretly recover a set of jewels misplaced by the Ministry.
It had been a costly assignment: in addition to committing necessary murders, he had irretrievably lost his heart to Severus. He had never admitted this aloud, but there was a hard glitter in Snape’s eyes that told him the other man knew of it.
